Brief History of the Opel Kadett D

The new Kadett D, introduced in the fall of 1979, was a car with a transverse mounted 1196cc OHV or 1290cc OHC engine, driving front wheels trough a 4-speed manual gearbox.
Disc front brakes and rear drums, rack and pinion steering, independent front suspension and beam type rear suspension.
5-door L estate fitted with reclining front seats and headrests, integral front air dam, heated rear window with wash-wipe.
GL hatchback fitted with quartz clock, door pockets, radio, velour trim, locking fuel cap and cigar lighter.

Opel also chose to develop a new series of engines for the Kadett that would take advantage of its new design.
During the following years this program would lead to several engines, with displacements ranging from 1.2 to 1.8-liters.
Measuring 3998 mm in length, the new model was 128 mm shorter than the Kadett C, but offered more interior room.

As is customary with Opel, three trim levels were available on all models of the Kadett D series: standard, luxury and Berlina.
For those with a sporting taste, the Kadett could be ordered with the SR equipment package, with included front and rear spoilers, low profile 185/60 radials on aluminum rims, flared fenders, Recaro sport seats and additional instrumentation.
The most powerful Kadett D, was the GTE, introduced in March 1983, with a 115 bhp, 1.8-liter engine featured electronic fuel injection, that offers a top speed of 187 km/h.
